this is in response to your open letter to endhimariyambu. http://sequence-non.tumblr.com/post/19512728921/an-open-letter-to-endhimariyambu
(i am not endhimariyambu)
i agree with some of the things which you have said, but here are some of the things i don’t agree with:
“mdp came to power after elections. they had conducted extensive door to door campaigns, listened to the people’s sentiments and developed a manifesto in order to address/manifest public needs/wants for the public. meanwhile, the coup leaders haven’t the faintest clue about public sentiment as everyone knows the majority of the population voted to oust an aging dictator. it wasnt about drp, mdp and other insignificant acronyms.”
it is true that mdp came to power after elections and they conducted door-to-door campaigns. whether in their 3-year rule they respected the sentiments of the people is another story. i think both mdp leaders and coup leaders are similar when it comes to having the faintest idea about public sentiments. all mdp leaders did try to do was fill their pockets with cash. did you hear about the falhurah given to pre-paid shiuna and the $20 million contract to reeko moosa?
you can say that there was a public ferry system under the mdp rule. did you know that the ferry operator selected for thaa atoll region is a guy who was hiding abroad after cheating people and collecting millions of rufiya? did you know that the ferry operator in raa atoll has ibrahim hussain zaki’s stake?
i respect your views and your decision to go to raalhugandu to protest against a military dictatorship. but then again i am not sure if its the military who are in control. i think it is the resort owners and big businesses of this country. the very same people who funded to transfer ali waheed and alhan to mdp. some of them were content with mdp’s rule till very recently and some of them were against mdp rule from the beginning.
anyway it is the same story all over again. koli, universal, champa, deen etc backed gayoom in his 30-years of autocratic rule. some of the backed anni too in his 3-year rule. then they back another guy. anyway all mdp did was also to create another wealthy class of elite people. reeko moosa was becoming the next ‘ilyas ibrahim’.
you say “currently an election is the only way to restore/regain whatever little we had of the people’s voice in the running of public affairs.”
an election did not empower the people in 2008 either. i support elections but don’t you think it just legitimizes the power of the elite over us?
don’t reply to my email given here because it’s fake!

i agree with all the points you’ve raised in your disagreement whole heartedly.
