Students from the University of Peru have created a billboard that produces purified water using only the humidity in the air. \u00a0In three months \u2013 this one billboard has created 9,450 liters of water or just over 800 gallons a month. \u00a0In an area with very little rain \u2013 this is significant. \u00a0 Now \u2013 put in context \u2013 the average American\u2019s \u201cwater footprint\u201d is just over 750,000 gallons of water per year (source<\/strong><\/a>). \u00a0In Bujama, Peru \u2013 where the billboard is located \u2013 the water output is enough for the needs of \u201chundreds of families per month\u201d. \u00a0Still \u2013 the potential benefits to society are incalculable. \u00a0And the water is free for anyone who needs it. Additionally \u2013 the billboard does require electricity to power 5 generators and it does not appear to be using solar power to generate some of that electricity.<\/p>\n

This billboard was created in a partnership between the University of Engineering and Technology, U.S. billboard powerhouse Clear Channel and a \u00a0couple of Peruvian media agencies. \u00a0You can watch an interview with some of the local residents who were asked about their thoughts on the water generating billboard HERE<\/strong><\/a>. \u00a0(Hint: they love it).<\/p>\n

Lima, the capital of Peru, is the second largest capital in the world that\u2019s located in a desert and access to drinking water is a problem to its 7 million people. Over a million have no access to running water at all and rely on private companies to deliver to their homes.<\/p>\n

The city is part of a coastal desert of Atacama, the driest in the world. It depends on drainage from the Andes as well as runoff from glacier melt \u2014 both sources on the decline because of climate change.<\/p>\n

Due to the extremely dry climate, annual precipitation is less than 1 inch, many people draw water from wells that are often polluted \u2013 worldwide 2.2 million people die every year from drinking contaminated water.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Well, we have all the answers we need to solve all our problems! The US \u201cmovers & shakers\u201d do not WANT that!
