{"id":5245,"date":"2011-03-26T13:39:00","date_gmt":"2011-03-26T08:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/monochromist.com\/?p=5245"},"modified":"2021-08-26T13:45:34","modified_gmt":"2021-08-26T08:45:34","slug":"male-wifi-access-points-geo-tagged-and-it-looks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/monochromist.com\/notes\/2011\/03\/26\/male-wifi-access-points-geo-tagged-and-it-looks\/","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>MALE\u2019 WIFI ACCESS POINTS GEO-TAGGED!<\/p>\n<p>And it looks a bit like this\u2026..<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some points of note:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; i did not cover a lot of roads and goalhi\u2019s\u2026&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; GPS accuracy will be around 10-50m on average.. some areas might be a bit wider(as the point was logged where it was first seen, and not the strongest signal)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; i did not collect supported data rates (ie, did not differentiate between b\/g\/n)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; 2.4 Ghz only\u2026 no 5ghz<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; speed of the driving could have had an impact on number of identified points.. had i lingered longer at some spots\u2026&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; no high gain equipment\u2026&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; observations made were made on the samples collected, i believe its a good representation of the whole.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interesting Observations:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Below Chart shows the encryption type in use. it\u2019s nice to know 92.5 use some form of encryption still 308 is still a large number of points without any type of encryption, but Considering you really should be using WPA or WPA2 these days it\u2019s still troubling that 40.06% use none or WEP encryption which is weak and easily breakable.<\/p>\n<p>-large number of access points have repeated SSID\u2019s, i\u2019ve selected the top 10\u2026 of those there are a lot which are the manufacturer default or ISP default.. .which really shouldn\u2019t be the case. it is very likely that these points are extremely vulnerable with default passwords or most used passwords as well.<\/p>\n<p>-using the data it is also possible to identify which access points have which type of encryption to identify the most vulnerable. i\u2019ve highlighted just a few as shown below where there are multiple SSID\u2019s under same name and where no encryption is setup.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>-channel distribution is as expected, non overlapping 1, 6 and 11 make up 88.23%. which is good,<\/p>\n<p>EDIIT : for non-techies : 2.4 Ghz is the frequency where wifi lives.. to be precise 2.401-2.495 Ghz depending on where you are(2.4Ghz b\/g\/n)\u2026 (it is unlicenced meaning you dont need a specific authority or permission to use italthough CAM has setup some guidelines for maximum power output\u2026 thats another story).. this range is split up to 14 channels 1 through to 14.. &nbsp;most routers don\u2019t come with channel 14 enabled as it is not allowed in most countries\u2026 regulation wise\u2026 so the most common channels are 1-13.Thing is each channel takes a chunk of the whole 2.401-2.495 Ghz range\u2026 BUT\u2026adjesant channels overlap.. lets put it into visual context here.. say channel 1 = 2.401\u20132.423 GHz and channel 2\u2026 2.406\u20132.428 GHz, as you can see there is an overlap where 1 ends and 2 starts\u2026 this overlap results in interference which results in bad quality connection in general.<\/p>\n<p>image: Wikimedia<\/p>\n<p>the diagram does a good job of explaining how channels overlap.. and as you can see the actual non-ovelapping channel ranges are 1, 6, 11.<\/p>\n<p>above is the actual results of the site survey done near my wifi router\u2026 on channel 1 you can see my router.. routers around me are on the remaing channels with lower peaks.. but as you can see channel one is the cleanest channel around for me so i have set it up there which will result in me getting the best quality wifi signal possible.but the actual channel you choose depends on the channel usage at the location where you setup you access point.. which means a site survey is in order..<\/p>\n<p>more info on channels? head over to wikipedia<\/p>\n<p>i am providing the files for download below i am also providing with a link for google maps overlay for you to play around with. i dont mind anyone using it for personal or educational purposes, but not for commercial work or profit\u2026. i would appreciate a link back \/ attribution. do let me know if you use it for any of your projects.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MALE\u2019 WIFI ACCESS POINTS GEO-TAGGED!
